Scenic 30A

To me, Blue Lupine is one of the major reasons that 30A is scenic. I love this plant. The blossoms can be startlingly azure and the leaves are a soft silver. It's been blooming for about a week now. It's been a good year for this plant (also known as Gulf coast Lupine), some years are not. Maybe colder winters are helpful to it. Today, driving east on 30A I saw a magnificent stand of them on the south side of the road that took my breath away. They are living happily on a pile of brilliant white sand that a few years ago someone had piled up on a makeshift lot. The lot would not make a particularly good home for people but the plant is thriving there. Blue Lupine is why Blue Mountain Beach is called Blue Mountain Beach. This is the highest point on the coast. Before there were any houses here so from a boat the view of white dunes covered in Blue Lupine would have looked like a mountain of blue. See the blooms while you can. They don't last too long and because it is a true wild flower it isn't something you can pick-up at the garden shop. It is a real pleasure to see them every Spring.

Tomorrow Tops'l State Park is honoring Earth Day from 10am til 6pm. There are fun things to do for kids, special food experiences and a lot of hiking to enjoy.
