Repairing 30A at Redfish
We had such a rainy summer. It really took a toll on our roads and as a result 30A is going to be undergoing some major repair this fall and winter. This section of the road at Big Redfish Lake (between 83 and 283) has been closed and 30A traffic must detour up to hwy 98 until it is repaired. Sections over the dune lake have washed out before but this time our county commissioners sound like they are going to take the action it will require to fix it correctly by putting a bridge over the dune lake rather than just patching the road. This is going to be a difficult project and businesses, dependent on 30A traffic are already feeling the backlash of this road closure. This is our slow time of year and that is a bit of a blessing but it probably doesn't feel that way to them right now.
With so many government agencies involved, there is going to be a lot of controversy about the bridge span and it will take longer than any of us want to wait. We will certainly be personally inconvenienced as to get to work and back we will be doing the big detour loop up to 98 at least twice a day. Still, the bridge will look better, it will last longer, and most importantly it will be better for the health of the lake. So while it is getting repaired, we will try to stay close to home doing our part to support the local businesses most affected.
The BCC is being smart about this repair. Any action that is good for our coastal dune lakes is good for our local economy.
UPDATE: The county is putting in a temporary fix. A well-known neighbor might have helped this idea along.
