Nothing Personal

Went to the beach Saturday morning. We always go early to beat the rush. The temps a little nicer in the morning too. Anyhow, there were two things on the beach that I wish weren't there. One was the clean-up crew...nothing personal...I just can't wait until they gone, a thing of the past. They don't seem particularly busy the locals have reported them sleeping a lot, but I know they are a necessary evil right now. The second "thing", and within everyone's control, are tents and beach gear left out all night. It's against beach code and just bad beach etiquette. Taking everything home at the end of the day may be a bit of hassle but it's the right thing to do and something the beach patrol shouldn't have to worry about right now.

The first thing everyone does now upon arrival, even before setting up their beach accoutrement's, is to go down to the waters edge to check for oil. I can tell you, you won't often see it. The prevailing winds are helping us and what does come gets picked up quickly by the before mentioned clean-up crews. There are sporatic sightings and tests show evidence of oil even when you don't see it. However, don't confuse a reddish or brown tint to the water as oil. Sometimes our dune lakes spill out fresh water that has a red tint. And a strong surf can stir things up, sometimes churning up the dune lake water, to make a color that I'm sure people might mistake as oily water. The tar balls we've seen and heard about from others are small, dime to quarter sized, often in patches. That is what you may see. The beaches are open so it's an individual choice whether you go in or not.
Got to see Hubba Hubba play at Shoo Mamas. Hubba Hubba always rocks.

  1. The picture you have up looks like the beach is pretty clean and clear.

  2. That photo was from Saturday and a close-up would show that it was really kind of churned up like I mentioned but not from oil. It's summer so some days there is "June Grass" which is annoying and as previously noted, there are tar balls that wash up randomly. It depends on the direction of the wind. You have to decide whether or not to swim knowing that. I don't swim but it would take a lot to keep me away from walking the shoreline. I'll keep posting photos.
