Beach Walks
Some days in August are as hot as a pancake griddle. I stay out of the garden on those days. The best place to enjoy it is at the shore. There is almost always a nice breeze and the water will both cool you and soothe you. You can get your mind off your worries with a walk, the sand working your muscles or you can just sit like a lump enjoying a view that will relax your mind. Both good choices and perfectly compatible.
A good beach walk will sometimes include seeing some great sand art. Some of the artists use sand buckets and shovels clearly bought just for the occasion and they are usually strong and solid. When you look at them it's easy to picture the determined family, hours before, in line at a store with a cart full of toys designed specifically for the beach. There a lots of different ways to express yourself in the sand. Covering family members up with sand mermaids or alligators is always a favorite. Writing messages of love is popular and of course there is the classic building of sand castles. Recently I noticed a sand castle that the artist designed incorporating random organic items found scattered in and around his/her/their sandy canvas. It looked like it had been built the day or night before and even though it was already weathered, it still radiated some of the creative energy of it's designers. No matter what you build, sooner or later, the gulf takes it all back. That's the poetic part of the exercise. You relax while you build it, you and others enjoy seeing it, then the gulf clears the canvas clean for the next effort. It's the nature of the beach.
