October at the Beach

I would rather be in South Walton in October than anywhere on the planet. The weather is perfect. The color of the sky competes with the color of the water like it's a beauty pageant. The air temp is cool. No need for closed windows and air conditioning. Can I hear a hallelujah! It's a very liberating time of year somehow. The bugs are scarce, the birds seem happier, the fall flowers are beautiful, the butterflies are plentiful. After this awful summer, we all really deserve this. I could not work at all this afternoon. I had fall fever bad so I just gave in to it and went off to the beach. Great move. The beach was beautiful and my little shorebirds were there to entertain and I was pretty happy with that. But then I caught a splashing out of the corner of my eye. And there they were. A large pod of dolphins, maybe 20, going west along the shoreline. They were pretty far out, my camera couldn't catch it but they certainly put on a show. They were fishing I guess but some of them couldn't work either today because there were a some spectacular jumps going on, even some group jumps interrupting the steady up to the surface and down again rhythm of the group. It was a special treat; something I wish everyone could have the pleasure to see.

  1. Yes Laurel, you are so right, there's something extra special about this time of year along the Beaches of South Walton. There's a tingling feeling of anticipation in the air, a shift in the sun's rays hitting trees, homes and the seashore and so much to see and do here. You're definitely not alone in suffering from "Fall Fever"! We loved hearing about your dolphin encounter, very magical. The beaches along 30-A are an especially inspiring place to be in October.
